Metals and Non-Metals

Previous Index Next

Physical properties of Non-Metals :-

1. Neither malleable nor ductile but brittle - they break into pieces when hammered.

Sulphur and phosphorus.

2. Do not conduct heat or electricity-

  • Carbon ( in form of graphite)is the only non-metal which is a good conductor of electricity.

3. Dull in appearance - No shine

  • Iodine has luster.
4. Soft and easily broken - has low strength like graphite.
  • Diamond ( an allotrope of carbon) is the hardest natural substance.
  • Allotropes are two or more different forms of the same element.
5. Solid, liquid or gas at room temp. -

Solid – carbon, sulphur, phosphorus.

Liquid – bromine

Gas – hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, chlorine.

6. Low melting and boiling points -

  • Diamond has high melting point.

7. Low densities -

8. Non-sonorous-

9. Have different colours -

Sulphur is yellow, phosphorous is white or red, graphite is black, chlorine is yellowish green, hydrogen and oxygen are colourless.
