The Akanksha Foundation is a non-profit organization with a mission to provide children from low-income communities with a high-quality education, enabling them to maximize their potential and transform their lives. Akanksha works primarily in the field of education, addressing formal education by initiating school reform through The School Project as well as non-formal education through the Akankshacenters. Currently, Akanksha reaches out to the 5000 children through its 16 schools and 8 centers in Mumbai and Pune.

Job Description:

The counsellor will support the schools to meet the needs of students with specific social/ emotional challenges and/or disabilities. They will ensure that schools understand how, students with these needs than thrive in an inclusive classroom setting that ensures instruction is differentiated and holistic.
Major responsibilities include:-

In the schools visiting the different schools across the city.

Within classrooms

Classroom observation
Identifying children with emotional, behavioural, learning problems.
Documenting every case
Conducting sessions with children in classrooms on self-awareness, growing up, life skills or topics as may be brought up as concern areas by the teachers.( in year 2)

With teachers and Social Workers and School Leaders

Conducting at least one session per term in every school with the aim of increasing teacher, social worker and School Leader awareness on children\'s issues.
Capacity building of teachers to deal with children in the classroom.
Regularly briefing the teachers, social workers and School Leaders about the status of the children who are undergoing counselling.
Collaborating with the school social worker to ensure necessary follow-ups are done testing, meeting parents, speech therapy, etc.

Outside the schools

With the community

Home visits with the aim of understanding the family, its dynamics and other aspects which affect the children.
One on one session with the parents of the children being counselled.
Capacity building of the parents to help them better their parenting skills

With external agencies

Coordinate with government hospitals for IQ testing, Speech therapy, Occupational therapy
Collaborating with external experts for counselling of severe cases.
Collaborating with external experts for conducting capacity building sessions for the teachers and parents.
Salary:INR 2,75,000 - 3,00,000 P.A.
