The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) pattern of education will be in place in all the 452 government schools in the Union Territory of Puducherry from June 4, 2014, said Chief Minister N Rangasamy.
While for English medium schools, the CBSE pattern would be from Ist to VI standard and in Tamil and other regional language schools, it would be followed in the Ist standard only. Step by step the pattern would be introduced in higher classes in the next few years.
The CBSE pattern has been adopted by the government to bring in uniformity in school education system as the UT has been following the curriculum of Tamil Nadu government in Puducherry and Karaikal but Mahe and Yanam have been following the curriculum of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh governments, respectively. The introduction is based on the recommendations of an expert committee set up under the chairmanship of DTS Rao, joint secretary, regional office of CBSE Chennai, and the roadmap suggested by it.
Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu medium schools would come fully under CBSE by the year 2025-2026, while English medium schools would fully adopt it by 2020-2021.
While a three-language formula would be followed in Mahe and Yanam regions, in Puducherry and Karaikal regions the two- language pattern as followed by Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya would be adopted, said director of school education E Vallavan.
In Puducherry and Karaikal regions, Tamil and English would be taught from Ist to Vth and then from VI to VIII, English and Hindi would be taught as compulsory subject with Tamil and French as optional.
For classes IX and X, English would be compulsory with Tamil, Hindi and French as optional subjects. For appearing in the X board examination, the students are required to pass the VIIIth-level examination in functional Hindi, said the director.
In Mahe, Malayalam and English would be taught from Classes I to V, while English and Hindi were compulsory along with optional Malayalam, Arabic, French in VI to VII. For class IX and X, along with English, Malayalam, Arabic, French and Hindi would be taught.
In Yanam, a similar pattern to Puducherry region follows, replacing Tamil with Telugu.
For the classes I to VIII, the curriculum and textbooks of NCERT would be followed, while for classes IX and X the curriculum and textbooks prescribed by CBSE would be followed.
