CHILDREN AND OBESITY
By : Swathi
It is alarming to see the increasing obesity, especially among school-going chidren. Obesity is a lifestyle disorder and the children’s life-style is largely responsible for it. Children, now-a-days are given a comfortable life and luxuries are made available to them almost on a platter. After conducting a survey of children of A.B.C School, Delhi it has been observed that the prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents has been on a steady rise. During the last five years the level of obesity has risen by five times in the primary age group, about three times in the middle age group and three times in the senior age group. This is because the children of today do not believe in any kind of physical activity. They have wrong eating habits and intake of junk food has become the order of the day. It is now the duty of parents to monitor their child’s daily regime and diet. Children should be made to understand the harmful effects of their wrong preferences and stringent steps should be taken to bring some kind of discipline in the children’s life-style. Unless children are not made to give vent to their physical activities they can never harbour a healthy body. Their body, mind and spirit should be made to function simultaneously so that they can be free from obesity and the problems related to being obese.
It is time we took serious view of this problem before it is too late to remedy the situation.
