Ans. Like other European powers France also thought that colonies were essential to supply natural resources and other essential goods. Thus the following steps were taken by the French to increase the agricultural production after they had acquired colonies like Vietnam.
(i) After gaining control over Vietnam, the French began building canals and draining lands in the Mekong delta to increase cultivation.
(ii) The vast system of irrigation works, canals and earthworks increased rice production and allowed the export of rice to the international market.
(iii) The area under rice cultivation was extended from 274,000 hectares in 1873 to 1.1 million hectares in 1900 and it was further increased to 2.2 million hectares in 1930.
(iv) Vietnam exported two-thirds of its rice production and gradually became the third largest exporter of rice in the world.

Ans. The Role of women in public life has improved greatly.
(i) Women have been working successfully as scientists, doctors, engineers, lawyers, managers and college and university teachers. They are also a proud part of the Indian Armed Forces.
(ii) They are not just home makers but are now found at the forefront of things in every field from the corporate sector to the glamour world. They work as CEOs of big MNCs and are also leading journalists, actors, painters, classical dancers etc.
(iii) Many radical women’s movements, women’s organisations and activists have been demanding more power for women by having more elected representatives. Panchayati Raj in India has reserved one-third seats for women in Local Government bodies. E.g., Mrs. Sonia Gandhi is the head of one of our national parties.
(iv) Women have full rights to participate in public affairs, vote and contest for public offices. They are a part of the civil services, government offices and municipal corporations.

Ans. Role of agro-based industries in Indian economy. Agriculture and industry are not exclusive of each other. They move hand in hand.
(i) The agro-based industries in India have given a major boost to agriculture by raising its productivity as they obtain their raw material from agriculture.
(ii) Development and competetiveness of industries has not only assisted agriculturists in increasing their production but also made the production processes very efficient.
(iii) The farmers are heading for commercial farming to produce high value crops for industries. This may in turn help improve the economic status of the farmers.
(iv) These industries, by creating demand, support the growth of many other industries e.g., packaging materials and engineering works etc.
