Ans. Features of colonial economy of Vietnam.
(i) The colonial economy in Vietnam was primarily based on rice cultivation and rubber plantations owned by the French and a small Vietnamese elite. The French built canals and drained lands in the Mekong Delta to increase rice cultivation. A vast system of irrigation was built which led to great expansion in rice production and gradually Vietnam became the third largest exporter of rice in the world.
(ii) Rail and port facilities were set up to support and service this sector.
(iii) Indentured Vietnamese labour was widely used in the rubber plantations. French did little to industrialise the economy.
(iv) In the rural areas landlordism spread and standard of living declined.

Ans. Causes of concentration of cotton textile industry in Maharashtra and Gujarat.
(i) Availability of raw cotton was abundant and cheap because these are the traditional cotton growing States.
(ii) Moist climate in these coastal States also helped in the development of cotton textile industry because humid conditions are required for weaving the cloth, else the yarn breaks.
(iii) Well developed transportation system and accessible port facilities in Maharashtra and Gujarat led to their concentration here.
(iv) Proximity to the market is yet another factor as cotton clothes are ideal and comfortable to wear in these warm and humid States.
(v) Cheap labour was abundantly available.

Q. 25. Explain the efforts made and suggestions given to reform the political parties and the leaders. 4 Ans. Some of the efforts made to reform political parties are:
(i) The Constitution has been amended to prevent elected MLAs and MPs from changing parties. Now if any elected MLA or MP changes his party, he or she will lose his/her seat in the Legislative Assembly or Parliament. This amended law has helped to bring down the number of defections.
(ii) The Supreme Court has passed an order to reduce the influence of money and criminals. Now it has become mandatory for every candidate, who contests election, to file an affidavit giving details of his assets and criminal cases pending against him. This has helped in making this information available to the public.
(iii) The Election Commission has passed an order making it necessary for political parties to hold their organisational elections and file their Income-tax Returns.
