Q. 14. Answer the following in 50-75 words. 4
Which blessings were experienced by the mariners when an albatross came to their ship?

Ans. With the arrival of the albatross on their ship the big ice-bergs surrounding their ship cracked and the helsman was able to steer them through the ice. A favourable south wind began to blow. The clouds in the sky cleared and the moon shone brightly in the night-sky. These were the blessings experienced by the mariners.

How did the frog introduce himself to the nightingale? What comments did he make on the nightingale’s singing?

Ans. The frog introduced himself as the owner of the tree on which the nightingale had perched. He told her he was known for his splendid singing and he even wrote lyrics for Bog Trumpet very often. He told the nightingale that her song was not too bad but far too long. Her technique of singing was fine but it lacked a certain force.

Q. 15. Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow. Write your answers in one or two lines only. 4
Scrooge : Merry Christmas indeed! What right have you to be merry? You’re poor enough.
Fred : What right have you to be dismal? You’re rich enough.
(a) Who is Fred? What does he want from Scrooge? 2
(b) What light does this dialogue throw on the character of Scrooge? 2

Ans. (a) Fred is Scrooge’s nephew, the son of his only sister Fan. He wanted to invite Scrooge to have Christmas dinner with him and his wife.
(b) This dialogue reveals Scrooge’s rude and coarse behaviour towards others. He does not believe in qualities like benevolence, charity, mercy and the common welfare of mankind. Besides, he does not even honour the spirit of Christmas in his heart.
