Subject: Dangers to Environment due to Mining

Sir,

Recently, I read a news item in the news magazine, Outlook, and immediately I wanted to share my extreme concern with all the readers on how irresponsible mining poses dangers not only to the environment but also to the health of miners.

The news item was on how, for a tiny gold ring, miners dig up 30 tonnes of rock and sprinkle it with diluted cyanide. This very cyanide flows into rivers, killing fish and other aquatic plants. Mining also generates waste rock material which, when exposed to air and water, produces pollutants like arsenic, which are extremely poisonous. Hardrock mining generates more toxic waste than any other industry and also poses danger to the health of miners. It is most unfortunate on how we can so conveniently overlook the various ways in which we are contaminating our environment. Immediate steps must be initiated to deal with this form of environmental pollution. Mining techniques need to be improved upon so that we can utilise nature’s resources without harming the environment. Qualified professionals should be employed by the mining industry to implement more naturefriendly techniques into practice.

How much longer can we callously disregard our environment? I sincerely hope the concerned authorities will take a serious view of this problem.

Sincerely yours,
Benita
