How did the invisible scientist fi rst become visible? What compelled him to become invisible again in the chilly air of January?

What are the subtle ways in which the lady in red manages to deceive Horace Danby and goes away with the jewels?

Ans. The invisible scientist first became visible when he slipped into a big London store for warmth from the bitterly cold weather. There he broke open boxes and wrappers and fi tted himself into warm clothes. Fully dressed he was now also a fully visible person. Finally he settled down to sleep but he did not manage to get up on time, before the shop assistants arrived. Seeing them approach Griffi n panicked and began to run. The shop assistants began chasing him and he could only escape by quickly taking off his newly found clothes. So once more he became invisible in the chilly January air.

The lady in red uses her subtle but clever and confi dent ways to deceive Horace Danby and goes away with the jewels. Posing as the lady of the house, she makes up a false but realistic assuring story of having forgotten the numbers to open the safe. Overwhelmed by the lady’s kindness and in an effort to genuinely help a lady in distress Horace goes out of his way to ensure that the lady faces no further inconvenience and in the process lands himself into trouble and eventually ends up in prison. The lady proves to be much cleverer than Horace and is able to dupe him without much effort.

Ausable at fi rst makes a casual remark to Max about the existence of a balcony attached to his room and then very naturally goes on to give a detailed and realistic account about how this balcony had become a nuisance for him, easily managing to make Max believe that there was a balcony attached to his room.
