  • In democracy, people expect the government to work for their welfare and betterment. This could be done through the provision of health, education, employment, housing, development of roads, facility of electricity etc.
  • Health means ability of a person or animal to remain free of illness and injuries.
  • Health is not only associated with illness, but it also includes factors that affect health like clean drinking water, pollution free environment, healthy food to eat etc.
  • Living in good spirit and without mental strain is also an important aspect of health.
  • In India although all resources are available, but still we are not able to get proper medical facilities and treatment.
  • Various health care facilities can be divided into two categories- public health service and private health facilities.
  • Public health service is run by government, It involves various health centres and hospitals that are linked together to cover both rural and urban area. At the village level there are primary health centre, at the district level there are District Hospitals. Large cities have many government hospitals.
  • One of the most important aspects of public health system is that it provides quality health care services either free or at lower cost, so that even poor can get treatment.
  • A large number of doctors run their own private clinics. Also there are hospitals and nursing homes that are privately owned. But unlike public health service in private facilities patients have to pay lot of money for every service used by them.
  • It is the responsibility of the government to provide better and quality health care services to all citizens. Government should take measures to improve drinking and cooking water quality and to keep surrounding and environment clean. By adopting these many diseases can be prevented from getting spread.
