The Karnataka State Open University came into being in 1996 by an act promulgated by the Karnataka State Assembly, known as the Karnataka State Open University Act. KSOU evolved from the Institute of Correspondence Course and Continuing Education of the Mysore University. It is the 8th Open University of India. It is situated on a 15 acre land lying on the Mysore- Mangalore highway, within the campus of Mysore University. This university has its jurisdiction over whole of Karnataka and operates through its wide network of study centers in cities like Bagalkote, Bangalore, Bellary, Belgaum, Chikmanglur, Dharwad, Kolar, Raichur, Shimoga and others. It has 13 departments handled by 57 faculty members.
KSOU presently has a strength of about 40,000 students. It is in the process of establishing a "virtual university". KSOU has a vision of providing education to the underprivileged and to those who could not continue higher education for some reason. It also strives to make education cost effective with the purpose of democratizing education.

KSOU organizes an interactive session between it's Faculty members and students twicw in a year, for a period of 15 days each. This is directed towards establishment of proper communication channel between teachers and students.
Karnataka State Open University Admissions
For bachelor's degree course
(i) Candidates who have completed 18 years of age on the 1st of July, does not require any educational qualification
(ii) Candidates below 18 years of age have to produce evidence of passing the 10+2 exams.
For Master's degree courses
(i) Candidates who have completed 21 years of age does not require any educational qualification
(ii) Candidates below 21 years have to produce evidences of being a graduate.
