Q. 4. The refractive indices of four media A, B, C and D are given in the following table :

Medium A B C D
Refractive Index 1.33 1.50 1.52 2.40

If light travels from one medium to another, in which case the change in speed will be (i) minimum, (ii) maximum?

Ans. (i) Change in the speed of light is minimum in A as it is optically lesser dense than the other media. (ii) Change in the speed of light is maximum in D as it is optically denser than the other media.

Q. 5. Light enters from air into glass having refractive index 1.50. The speed of light in vacuum is 3.0 × 108 ms–1. What will its speed in glass be?

Sol.

Q. 6. Two solutions A and B have pH values of 5 and 8 respectively. Which solution will be basic in nature?

Ans. The solution B will be basic in nature as its pH value is 8.

Q. 7. Draw the pattern of magnetic field lines in and around a long current carrying solenoid. Indicate
(i) the polarity at each end and
(ii) the direction of magnetic field inside the solenoid.

Ans. Pattern of magnetic field lines in and around solenoid (i) polarity at each end (ii) direction of magnetic field See Q.1 (b) (L.A.T.), Chapter 13. [Page 149
